About MIMDI

Meghalaya Integrated Mountain Development Initiative (MIMDI) is the Meghalaya Chapter of Integrated Mountain Initiative (IMI), a nonprofit civil society organization based at New Delhi providing a platform for stakeholders in mountain states in the Himalayan region for sustainable development. MIMDI was formally formed in February 2019, although the process started in 2018.


Legal Status: MEGHALAYA INTEGRATED MOUNTAIN DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE (MIMDI), a nonprofit, civil society organization registered under the Registration of Societies Act XXI of 1860, bearing the number No. SR/MIMDI-1/19 of 2019 having its registered office at Lumshyiap, Upper Golflinks, Langkyrding-A, Shillong-793001, Meghalaya which works towards bringing together representatives of the government, civil society organizations, media, academia, and the industry and entrepreneurs to get together to dialogue and/or formulate actions for sustainable development both within and outside Meghalaya, hereafter referred to as “MIMDI”

Objectives

A Meghalaya-centric approach towards all the problems plaguing the state and its indigenous communities.
Demonstrate and function as a think tank and help in the formulation of appropriate policies with regards to water security, spring shed development, breeding of indigenous species etc. taking in to account the vast and rich traditional knowledge available with the communities in combating the impact of climate change.
Project itself as a professional and technical body endeavouring to influence policy decisions on complex environmental issues like waste management, air, soil, water and plastic pollution, biodiversity conservation among others.
Will endeavour to partner with various research and development institutions/ educational institutions in documenting and compiling climate change relevant data and sustainable development in the state for building an effective adaptive strategy.

HIMALAYAN CLEAN-UP

Since 2018, MIMDI has been organizing The Himalayan Clean-up (THC) along with all the states in the Indian Himalayan Region in collaboration with Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM-G), Govt. of Meghalaya, local Dorbars, communities, district administration, Police and educational institutions for waste audit and brand audit of the waste to highlight the urgent need to manage waste effectively especially plastic waste in the hilly terrains of the north-east India. SUSTAINABLE MOUNTAIN DEVELOPMENT SUMMIT–VIII

MIMDI organized a 3-day national level “Sustainable Mountain Development Summit - VIII”from 4-6th November,2019 in Shillong in collaboration with Government of Meghalaya, North-Eastern Council, Shillong, Integrated Mountain Initiative , New Delhi, ICIMOD, Kathmandu, GIZ, Shillong among others and deliberated on the summit theme entitled “Sustainable Mountain Initiatives for Livelihoods and Employment for Youth” and finalized its recommendations for policy consideration by the govt. MIMDI has funded a Hoolock Gibbon Conservation Programme in Garo Hills.

 

Currently, MIMDI is implementing a 3-year project on the “ Promotion Of Medicinal & Aromatic Plants (MAP) Based Livelihood Opportunities In the North Eastern Region To Augment Rural Income Through The Establishment of An Entrepreneurial Ecosystem” initially funded by North Eastern Council, Shillong for livelihood in Ri-Bhoi and Garo Hills of Meghalaya. Medicinal plants like Lemongrass, Stevia & Patchouli have been grown in nurseries and on community lands in Ri-Bhoi and Garo Hills of Meghalaya and harvested. The aromatic plant extracts/oils after packaging and value addition would be marketed by the farmers helping them in livelihood generation. Capacity building & training on MAP cultivation & harvesting have been imparted to the village community.

 

In addition to above initiatives, Institute of Natural Resources (MINR), Govt. of Meghalaya has sanctioned a project to MIMDI for establishment of Zonal Nurseries for Aromatic plants in Meghalaya. The project is completed.

 

MIMDI with funding from North-East Centre for Technology Application & Reach (NECTAR), Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India, New Delhi is establishing an aromatic and spice oil processing unit at Umsning in Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya.

 

MIMDI with the necessary infrastructure at its disposal is embarking on collection, processing and extraction of aromatic oil from Bay leaf (Tejpata) in Meghalaya.

 

MIMDI has recently facilitated capacity building and training of farmers in Apicultue and Cashew nut cultivation with technical guidance from ICAR Research Complex for NEHR, Umiam. Bee boxes would be distributed to the farmers for honey production in Ri-Bhoi district soon helping in income generation for the community.

 

MIMDI is facilitating Integrated Agarwood Cluster Development in Garo Hills with around 500 farmers enlisted with the organisation.Training has been given with assistance from RFRI, Jorhat.

 

MIMDI is helping in developing infrastructure of 2 schools in rural Meghalaya with CSR funding from the CRPF Sector office, Shillong .
